また社会制度そのものが、いまだ電子化に追い付いていないという実情もある。法制度にせよ会計制度にせよ、現行のものは非常に複雑かつ恣意的で、現場の人間の判断がなければ実用に耐えない。

たとえば電子貨幣が実現すれば、経理・財務の業務にあたる人間の数は劇的に減る。カネのやり取りすべてが最初からデータ化されていれば、あらゆる事務作業を省人化できる。

法律・司法の業界でも同じだ。現在の法律は原始的な自然言語により記述されている。判例集を読むたびに（検索しづらくて不便そうだなあ……）と思っていた。法律の条文にせよ判決文にせよ独特の文法で書かれているが、あの言い回しが電子化に適しているとは思えない。

自然言語により“決まりごと”を明文化し、社会を維持・運営する――人類がこの風習を生み出したのは、およそ4000年前だ。以後の歴史はその風習を精緻化し、発展させてきたにすぎない。ヒトの社会様式・行動様式は、根本的な部分ではメソポタミア文明の頃から変わっていない。あえて悪い言い方をすれば、単純作業でメシを食っているすべてのヒトは古代人と大差ないのだ。
